Eurasian Collared-Dove

Description:

A Medium sized, vary pale sandy dove with a narrow black hind collar. Sandy-brown with black half-collar, white sides to tail, and white underwing coverts. Forehead and crown pale grey often merging into vinous-buff on nape and hindneck. Juvenile lacks neck-collar, and feathers of upperparts are fringed with buff.


Distribution:

Rare summer visitor in the central Gilgit-Baltistan, especially Gilgit, Diamer, Hunza and Nagar. Inhabits semi-desert and arid country with scattered trees, cultivations, groves and gardens. Generally lowlands, exceptionally up to 3000m.


Behavior:

Although most food is taken on the ground, birds may fly up with rapid wingbeats to pluck berries from bushes and trees. Large numbers may gather locally to feed on animal fodder and around grain stores. Diet includes seed, cereal grain, fruits of herbs and grasses and some green parts of plants. Grains include wheat, maize and oats. Beetles, flies, maggots and small molluscs are also taken.
